Victorian Lignum Vitae Treen Box

A handsome Victorian turned treen box, expertly crafted from lignum vitae, one of the hardest and most prized exotic hardwoods. Dating from the late 19th century, the box displays the rich olive-brown to deep chocolate colouring and silky lustre for which lignum vitae is renowned, enhanced by decades of careful handling.

The elegant cylindrical form is decorated with crisp, finely turned concentric bands around both the body and lid, while the shallow domed lid is centred with a discreet turned button finial, creating a restrained yet sophisticated design. The exceptional density and naturally oily qualities of lignum vitae give the box a pleasing weight and beautifully smooth finish.

Originally intended for storing tobacco, sewing requisites or other treasured possessions, this is a fine example of Victorian treen craftsmanship. Its understated form and rich patina make it equally at home as a decorative object in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
