After graduating with a Masters Degree in Graphic Design from the Royal College of Art in 1980, Philip led one of London’s most esteemed graphic design practices for over thirty years, followed by a decade in partnership with his son, Joseph. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate for Services to Graphic Design by Norwich University of the Arts in 2016. Alongside his past career in the applied arts, Philip continues to experiment and develop his own more personal, expressive body of work spanning collage, sculpture, printmaking, painting and mixed media. Given his education in form, layout and space, his output unsurprisingly maintains a strong graphic undercurrent. A dedicated collector with a passion for everyday finds, Philip’s work also aims to celebrate the ‘discarded and discovered’. His two- and three-dimensional compositions incorporate the repurposed covers of old cloth-bound books, printed ephemera, and flotsam found along the Norfolk coast, foreign shores or the Thames towpath (next to which his studio is located). His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including a group show at the Jerwood Space and a solo presentation at the Chelsea Arts Club in 2019. He continues to keep a sketchbook with daily entries, observations, studies and ideas for inspiring larger works posted on Instagram @canarycarlo
